Stewart Lane is a musical maverick whose interest has always lied in the mixing of musical styles and genres.
He spent his early adult years restless and directionless until, waking up one morning on a Felluca on the Nile while back-packing in Egypt, he knew the path he wanted to follow would be music.
As a teenager, like many others, Stewart was a proliific writer of songs and song writing is a medium he would return to again and again. His own approach has always been to fashion his songs from a poetic rather than narrative perspective. Through developing an interest in psychology and body energy systems, Lane saw the potential in music and song writing to engage more directly with the feelings and imagination of an audience and find a way round the blocking and more narrow aspects of the logical/ mental aspects of seeing oneself and the world.
As an international artist composer and performer, Stewart has worked in many areas including theatre, dance and film. His first classical music commission was for string trio in 1990. Since then other commissions have included three string quartets, sonatas for violin, ‘cello and saxophone (Spaces revealed By Absence, The properties Of Dust and A Chase Through Darkness), along with various works for orchestra, chamber orchestra and mixed ensemble.
Between 1989 – 1996 Lane formed BAL, an experimental music performance ensemble which allowed him to explore song-writing in broad genre bending settings. He returned to song writing in 2005 with THE FLOOD, a short song cycle for five voices and chamber orchestra. Other material developed out of this and eventually became BLACK APOLLO, the story of one person's journey towards a better understanding of who they are, in all its joyful, beguiling, painful, mind expanding and bewildering intensity. BLACK APOLLO saw Lane fuse classical and operatic styles with indie rock. Intrigued by the new possibilities he found open to him in the latter, he began work on a trilogy of Indie rock song collections.
The first to be released was CRASHING OF PLANES in 2008 followed by TALES FROM THE WHITE FRONTIER in 2009. He is currently working on the third and final part, SUPERNATURE, due to be released in three parts during 2010.
"I hope you enjoy listening to this music as much as I enjoyed making it. Please leave a message for me on the forum". - Stewart
